Here are some more pictures of the “OURS” exhibition.

Above is a photo of one of Sue Roberts’ sculptures. Sue lives and works on Guemes Island (which is the island next door, if you are not familiar with the area). She made this batch of sculptures especially for the show, they manage to be dark, disturbing and funny all at once.

Below it is a picture of Ariana Jacob’s installation. Ariana specializes in an art form she likes to call “public wondering”, the name is perfect. People are encouraged to sit in the gallery’s window and read the newspaper Ariana has put together. Featured in this photo is Evie who has lent a serious hand to the Anacortes Unknown Music Series.

PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT: KARL BLAU

Karl Blau constantly renews his commitment to exploring the frontiers of sound. In this world of instant access to musical cultures near and far that were once a series of thick walls of concrete – time becomes a limitless characteristic.

One of these artists is not like the others.

Did you guess who? It’s Karl!

Karl has been working on recording covers of songs written by brilliant songwriters from the Pacific Northwest, many of them involved in both editions of the Anacortes Unknown Music Series. We were blown away by the grunge energy he found in some songs written by Ashley Eriksson, Lois, Mirah and a bunch of others. Do not miss Karl’s performance, he’ll be starting at 4PM on the dot (the festival is on Saturday, you’ll have plenty of time to get here).

PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT: Ô PAON

Hello. I am Geneviève, the person who curated the Anacortes Unknown Music Series vol.II as well as the “OURS” exhibition, but I had a ton of help from friends, artists and performers as you’ll see if you come to Anacortes this weekend.

Ô Paon is my one-person band. At the moment I am in a strange position to write a fancy bio about myself, so I will save my energy for the show.

Marianna Ritchey received her PhD in Musicology from UCLA in 2011 and is currently a professor at Lewis and Clark College. Her dissertation concerns Berlioz, French Romantic ballet, and “fantastic” short stories, but she has also written and presented papers on Guy Maddin’s film “The Saddest Music in the World,” Kenny G in jazz reception, the ghostly afterlife of the medieval dies irae plainchant, economies of contemporary art music, and Mariah Carey. She is interested in the French Revolution, zombie movies, Sigmund Freud, sharks, Hildegard of Bingen, dog psychology, and David Foster Wallace.

Marianna Ritchey will be giving a presentation on Hildegard of Bingen during our dinner. This presentation promises to be both professional and hilarious. If you don’t have a full pass yet, we recommend you buy one. They will be taken offline very soon and we will not be selling full passes at the festival, we’ll only be taking money at the door for the other shows.

PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT: ALLYSON FOSTER

Allyson Foster is one half of the band Hungry Cloud Darkening, this will be her first solo performance. Allyson claims that her songs are written from a sad baby’s point of view, about being still and wondering what’s going on with her dog and why decisions are so hard to make.

More than a few of us around here are big fans of Allyson’s personality/artistry. She is walking poetry and weirdness, it comes to her naturally. She also has magical singing abilities. Sit back and listen to her voice, it is so effortlessly gentle and good.

PUBLISHER SPOTLIGHT: PUBLICATION STUDIO

Publication Studio, founded in 2009, publishes and makes books on-demand with writers and artists they admire. They attend to the social life of the book, aiming to create a public out of publication. PS Portland, Oregon is run by Patricia No and Antonia Pinter.

Patricia and Antonia came to our festival last summer. The books they make with a wide variety of authors are always inspiring and incredibly good looking. Since they have worked with many people involved in the “OURS” event we really had to have them back.

PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT: LORI GOLDSTON

Cellist and composer Lori Goldston lives in Seattle. A frequent collaborator with bands, composers, choreographers and film makers, her work drifts easily across borders and boundaries. Her first solo album, a compilation of film scores, will be released in May by Sub Rosa.

Sometimes you meet a musician who is so exciting to watch, very experimental, yet also easy-going. Only later do you come to realize how fancy this artist actually is, how that person who is so friendly and accommodating could play in the world’s most legendary concert halls and pull it off. Lori is that way.

PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT: LLOYD & MICHAEL

Lloyd & Michael is the latest iteration of the lifelong partnership of Kate Davidson and M. Ritchey (Dear Nora, Key Losers). Music for the earth and freeways, the small cries of animals, weird cactus at dusk. The intertwining of long-familiar voices. A craftsman’s care for melody and harmony. Hot synths and sweet guitar licks.

Attending a Lloyd & Michael performance is a rare pleasure. Their voices were made for each other. Watching them play and harmonize makes one realize how important and productive a long friendship can be.

PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT: JAE CHOI

Jae Choi is a writer fascinated by bodies of water, contained and uncontainable, man-made and otherwise. Her poems have been published in Tin House, The Iowa Review, Weekday, LVNG Magazine, and Poor Claudia. She currently teaches poetry at Portland State University and does not know how to swim.

As per our usual traditions, we like to mix things up and include writings and poetry to our events. We look forward to hearing Jae.

PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT: BROKEN WATER

Jon and Kanako have been playing music together since 2006. Stephen Steinbrink has recently joined them to play in Broken Water. They are a weird yet happy family.

The last time Broken Water played in Anacortes was during the last edition of our previous festival, What the Heck?. It was at the Port Warehouse and it was awesome. We had the chance to see them again in Olympia recently, Kanako did some serious headbanging.

Nikki McClure, reigning master of papercuts and Pacific Northwest imagery will be giving a talk about her work as part of the “OURS” exhibition.

Nikki has four original pieces which you can have a close look at if you visit the show.

She has an exciting career path, very inspiring to fellow artists looking for ways to support themselves and learn some creative discipline while still living in harmony with their surroundings.

The talk will be followed by a book signing. Nikki has a brand new children’s book called “How to be a cat”. Come hear what she has to say!

Nadia Moss is a Canadian artist currently working and living in Toronto, but I (Geneviève) first met her in Montréal where she has spent most of her adult life. This painting is made using dirt. If you take a really close look you can see twigs. This is just one of many incredible things a person can see as part of the “OURS” exhibition at Anchor right now. Come to the festival, come check it out! Having this type of work in a gallery in Anacortes is a rare treat, Anchor is precious.
